The Institute is the school of the ruling Golds, whose graduates join the elite called the Peerless Scarred, though Mickey dismisses it as a culling ground where Golds hack at one another.
The holoCan tells the miners that Golds learn there the secrets that will one day let mankind settle every planet of the Solar System. Dancer sees it as a road to power, since a Scarred can go on to train as Praetor, Legate, Politico or Quaestor. Mickey scoffs that it finds the strongest of mind and body simply by letting the students fight it out.
