Formed among the lowDraft students of House Mars at the Institute, the Howlers are known by their wolfcloaks, their nicknames, and an initiation involving cockroaches and a pitviper.
The Howlers are a band that forms among the lowDraft students of House Mars during the 542nd class at the Institute of Mars, the Gold proving ground. They are recognizable by the wolfcloaks they wear and by their habit of howling before a fight. Many go by nicknames rather than given names, a nod to the Institute, where peers and teachers named the first of them for their physical characteristics until the nicknames stuck. Their formal initiation brings recruits bound and blindfolded into a dark room lit by candles. Each drinks a full bottle of alcohol while music plays and the standing Howlers sing, then the binds come off and a bucket of live cockroaches and a pitviper is set down for the recruits to finish together. Once the buckets are empty, the new Howlers are handed a copy of the rulebook and helped to their feet, and the veterans put the wolfcloaks on them.
