The war in which Luna broke from Earth, subjugated it, and became the seat of power for all human civilization.
The Conquering is the war in which Luna threw off Earth and took its place. Generations of colonists on Earth's moon had built it into an economic power of its own, resentful of the taxes and ownership claims of the governments below, and when the moon went to war the twenty nuclear-armed nations of an Earth still recovering from World War III could not hold them. Earth was subjugated completely, and Luna became the seat of power for all human civilization in the solar system for the next eight centuries. The Golds who fought it are remembered as the Iron Golds, and later generations held them up as paragons of what their caste should aspire to.
