Picker is a lean, fox-like man of the Red Hand who takes the wife tax from a cowed town, choosing which young women are carried off to the militia's mine to be married.
He keeps a room of live computers at the old base, and is breakfasting on eggs and fish there when Duncan brings in a woman to be looked over. His eyes are weak, so he squints at her and has her spun. He says the matching of brides belongs to HeadTalk, best blood first, and he tells the girls to mind their manners and curtsy for Harmony, hailed as the Red Mother.
