Obsidian
Obsidians are the giant warrior caste of the Society in Red Rising, bred for battle, confined to polar tribes since the Dark Revolt, denied technology, and raised to revere the Golds as gods.
Obsidians are one of the lowColors in the hierarchy of the Society. Bred for size and violence, they stand far larger than any other Color and serve the Golds as elite warriors, the most feared soldiers in the Solar System. Their standing was fixed by the Dark Revolt of 200 PCE, a rebellion five centuries earlier that nearly broke the Society and ended with the caste decimated.
Since that time the Obsidian population has been confined to the polar regions of terraformed worlds, stripped of modern technology, and conditioned to revere Golds as gods. On Mars they live as warring tribes among the ice, ruled by Queens served by clan chieftains called Jarls, their culture reshaped by the Society into a matriarchy with Nordic names and customs. The strongest are taken from the poles to fight for their masters.
