Heliopolis
Heliopolis, the City of the Sun, is a great city of Mercury in Red Rising, built by House Votum between two mountain ranges, rich on the iron mines and munitions works that anchor the planet's economy.
Heliopolis is one of the great cities of Mercury, called the City of the Sun and counted the second richest city on the planet. It was raised around the middle of the fourth century of the Society's calendar by House Votum, the Gold family whose seat, the Mound, stands near the coast between the Bay of Sirens and the city's original settlement.
The city owes its weight to geography. Set between two mountain ranges, it commands the routes to the thousands of iron mines of the southern continent, and the ore that flows through it feeds munitions works within its own walls. That mixture of mining wealth and industry makes Heliopolis critical to Mercury's economy and to its place in the Society's affairs, a working city of heat, stone, and smelters under the nearest sun in the system.
