Fitchner au Barca is a Gold of Mars, serving as Proctor of House Mars at the planet's Institute, a post he has held since 725 PCE. The Proctors oversee the school's houses and trials, and Fitchner cuts an odd figure among them. Paunchy, hatchet-faced, and forever chewing gum, with hair closer to bronze than gold, he looks less like a Peerless than like a man the caste forgot to polish, and other Golds sneer at him accordingly.
The shabbiness hides a very quick mind. Fitchner is coarse, filthy-mouthed, and gleefully crude, but his wit is fast and his reading of people faster, and little that happens among his students escapes him. He delivers the Institute's hard truths with a shrug and a joke, an underestimated man inside an institution devoted to producing the opposite.
