Darrow is the hero of Red Rising, a sixteen-year-old Red Helldiver of Lykos who drills for helium-3 beneath the surface of Mars and believes his clan's labor is making the planet livable for future generations.
Darrow is the central figure of Pierce Brown's Red Rising saga, introduced as a sixteen-year-old Red of Lykos, a helium-3 mining colony deep beneath the surface of Mars. He is a Helldiver of the Lambda clan, the one who rides the clawDrill into gas-choked tunnels no one else will enter, and he is young for the work even in a trade that rarely lets its men grow old. He is married to Eo, a girl of his own township, and his ambitions reach no further than her, his family, and the next shift in the dark.
Like every Red of the mines, Darrow believes his people are pioneers, sent below to harvest the fuel the terraformers need to make the dead surface of Mars livable for the generations to come. He is rash, quick-tempered, and fearless where the tunnels are concerned, driving his crew hard in the hope of winning the Laurel, the prize of extra rations granted to the colony's best clan.
