The largest moon of the dwarf planet Pluto, tidally locked to it and half its diameter.
Charon is the largest of the five known natural satellites of the dwarf planet Pluto, and the sixth largest known trans-Neptunian object. With half the diameter and an eighth the mass of its parent body, it is a very large moon relative to Pluto: the barycenter of the system lies outside Pluto itself, and the two are tidally locked to each other. Its north polar cap is a reddish brown, made of tholins formed from methane, nitrogen and related gases.
