Asteroid Belt
A ring of tens of millions of bodies dividing the Rim from the Core, the Asteroid Belt is thinly settled: mining outposts, trade hubs, the odd pirate hideout, and rare cities.
The Asteroid Belt, called the Inner Belt or simply the Belt, is a ring of tens of millions of asteroids, dividing the gas giants of the Rim from the terrestrial planets of the Core. Only about two and a half million of its bodies run larger than a kilometer across. Given its size, few asteroids are inhabited at all, and most settlements amount to small mining outposts or trade hubs run by the Society, with the occasional pirate hideout among them. An asteroid with a real city on it is rare and held precious against the abyssal dark of the Gulf. Many bodies are grouped into Families or Clusters by shared orbital characteristics, and the larger groupings divide again, as the Koronis Family divides into the Karin Subfamily. The Trojan Cluster shares Jupiter's orbit at one of the planet's Lagrange points and holds the asteroid city of Priam.
