Ascomanni

The Ascomanni are a rumor at the edge of the Solar System, the name the Society gives to Obsidians said to survive in the darkness beyond the settled worlds. The stories trace them to the aftermath of the Dark Revolt, five centuries earlier, when surviving Obsidian warbands fled the cull of their caste and vanished into the Kuiper Belt among the dwarf planets and drifting ice.

For generations afterward, ships working the system's fringe disappear with no wreckage to explain them, losses written off as pilot error until a hull returns scored by diamond drills. Colonies of the far worlds tell of raiders striking refineries and mines and melting back into the dark. The Sovereigns of House Lune judge the Kuiper Belt too vast to scour, a search of centuries even for the fleet, so the Ascomanni remain what they have long been to the Society, a story with teeth.
