World of 2138 is the real world, Earth roughly a century into the future, and it is a ruin. Environmental destruction has run so far that unspoiled nature survives only inside video games. Black smog covers the sky and the sun shows itself only in brief snatches; toxic fog settles over the cities often enough that hardly anyone goes out without a gas mask, and artificial lungs are a fact of ordinary life. Rivers have turned strange colours, purification plants have stopped working, and tap water goes through a filter before anyone drinks it. Rain comes down acidic and foul-smelling. Open-air farming has all but ended, so grain and vegetables are raised in domes and raw produce is a luxury. Japan is governed in practice by its corporations, which took the legislature, the courts and the executive after food riots and a coup emptied the state of authority. Their own people live in sealed arcologies.
