A prince is a member of royalty, usually the son of a king, in societies where rule passes to a male heir. The son designated next in line carries the title of Crown Prince, most often the firstborn of the kingdom. Nothing guarantees an only heir, and when a king has more than one son the brothers commonly circle the throne as rivals, eyeing the succession like dogs contesting a bone. Those of princely rank hold the standing to speak in the courts of their kingdoms.
