Mysterious Island
A deserted island in Mass for the Dead, forested at its centre and ringed by beach and reef, once a pirate stronghold reached through a crab-guarded cave, and wrapped in a fog that hides whatever lies beyond it.
Mysterious Island is the working name for a deserted island in the New World. Forest covers the centre of it under a dense canopy, with a well the old inhabitants drew from and a road the grass has long since closed over; the shore is sandy almost the whole way round, broken by stretches of reef where crabs and slimes shelter. Two centuries ago pirates held the place, reaching their hideout through a cave at the back of a cove that a giant crab blocked by day, so that a crew could come and go only at night. Behind a second door lay a pool joined to the sea, where their ship was moored. Where the island actually sits is unsettled. Its water is salt, where the New World's open seas are fresh, and anything sent up to look sees nothing but water and an unmoving fog in every direction.
