In Overlord, mercenaries are fighters hired for pay rather than loyalty, contracted for wars, monster clearance and escort work, and known to drift into banditry once a war ends.

Mercenary is the general term in Overlord for people hired to carry out missions for pay. It exists as a job class, and it is also applied loosely to anyone taking that kind of work. Mercenaries go where the money is and are a common sight around the shops that sell weapons and equipment to them. Whole companies of them are contracted in wartime: in the yearly wars the Baharuth Empire fights with the Re-Estize Kingdom at the Katze Plains, only the Empire's knights are professional soldiers, while the Kingdom contracts mercenaries in bulk to meet them. Once a war ends, many drift into banditry and prey on travelers. They avoid villages, since other mercenaries are often hired there and nobody wants a fight with former comrades. The better disciplined bands find steady work guarding traveling merchants, and others take contracts in the Free City of Vadis hunting undead on the Katze Plains.
