Legendary Mermaid (伝説の人魚) is the working name of a merman who appears in Mass for the Dead, and the figure behind a piece of coastal folklore in the Re-Estize Kingdom. He is a bipedal fishman with green scales, webbed hands and feet, long whiskers and dorsal fins, and he carries himself like a commander of armies. Long ago he fought beside a human friend and came to love the princess of that man's country, who returned it; interspecies marriage was not something the age would allow, so rather than make trouble for either of them he went into exile in the sea caves off the coast, leaving a promise that he would come if his strength were ever wanted. Locals have retold that story for so long that the warrior in it has turned into a beautiful mermaid, though the instructions for calling him up have come down intact. On land he is not much. In the water he is close to untouchable, and he can pull the tide in toward the shore.
