Knight
Knight in Overlord is the general term for the specialized warriors of the New World, from the Baharuth Empire's professional standing army to the ennobled swordsmen of the Re-Estize Kingdom.
Warriors called knights appear throughout Overlord, but the word means different things in different nations of the New World. It serves as the generic term for specialized fighters, and as a job class name, though soldiers are counted as knights by role without necessarily holding the class.
In the Baharuth Empire, knights are commoners who make up the professional standing army, a trained soldiery maintained by the state. In the Re-Estize Kingdom the title is instead a grant of nobility, commonly conferred on sons who cannot inherit their households; because the Kingdom pays its knights handsomely, only the genuinely skilled are accepted, and connections alone cannot buy the rank even for a noble. The same word thus covers a salaried soldier in one country and a titled swordsman in the next.
