Halloween Festival

The Halloween Festival is a holiday event in YGGDRASIL, the game at the center of Overlord, run at Halloween and accompanied by the release of new themed skins. By the event's own lore it is a memorial for ghosts: the spirits of the dead take possession of pumpkins, and the resulting monsters come out to attack players. Because they count as undead, smashing them does nothing, so a player has to hollow the pumpkin out and light a flame inside, which puts the spirit at peace and leaves a jack-o-lantern behind for use as a decoration. Players can also dress in costume and call out for trick or treat. Ainz Ooal Gown traces the real holiday to a European celebration of the pumpkin harvest, since grown into a matter of costumes and candy, and notes how much it has in common with the Japanese Obon.
