Guardian in Overlord is the general term for the guards of the New World, a sponsored occupation in which sensitive posts like the Re-Estize palace require a noble's recommendation and accountability.
Guarding things is a formal occupation in Overlord's New World, and guardian is the general term for those who do it. The word doubles as a job class name, though most guards are counted as guardians by role rather than by class.
Guardians protect cities and sensitive places, and the more sensitive the post, the tighter the conditions. Standing watch where royalty, state secrets, or important information reside, such as the Valencia Palace within Ro-Lente Castle in the Re-Estize capital, requires a recommendation from a noble, and the recommending noble answers for any trouble the guard causes. Only candidates of clean background and sound mind receive sponsorship at all, and because a sponsor's factional loyalties tend to attach to the guard as well, palace service pulls its watchmen into the court's power struggles.
