The crown governs it directly through an appointed mayor rather than a feudal lord, and its walls mark the frontline of the Kingdom's annual clashes with the Baharuth Empire, fought almost every year in the nearby wilderness while the Slane Theocracy voices its own claims to the place.
War traffic makes the city a nexus of trade between the three countries, crowded with mercenaries and adventurers. E-Rantel is known for producing recovery potions and holds the largest concentration of pharmacists and herbalists in the land, and old stories tell of a dragon with power over natural disasters that once lived nearby. Two roads run northeast from its gates toward the frontier settlement of Carne Village.
