It belongs to dragons who reach the Ancient age category, possess special powers, or command exotic magic, and it marks its bearers among the strongest beings in existence in the New World.
Their kind once ruled outright. In the era remembered as the Age of the Dragon Lords, dragons dominate the world through Wild Magic, a form of casting native to it. That dominance ends in the wars of past centuries, above all the great war against the Eight Greed Kings of legend five hundred years ago, which leaves the race reduced to a scattered handful. The Dragon Lords who survive into the present are relics of that elder world, each one a power that nations treat with caution.
