Monsters of a new breed define the crisis in Overlord: Mass for the Dead. Chaos Beasts are creatures endemic to that game's telling of the New World, appearing in the wake of the calamity called the Catastrophe, the same upheaval surrounding the Great Tomb of Nazarick's transfer out of Yggdrasil.
They emerge from the purple fissures that erupt spontaneously across the regions and even inside Nazarick itself, and they menace a ruined world in which the surviving nations, the Re-Estize Kingdom, the Baharuth Empire, and the Slane Theocracy, struggle to rebuild. The beasts come in many forms, from quadrupeds and sword-bearing warriors to giants and dragons. On defeat a Chaos Beast's body dissipates, leaving behind a Chaos Stone, which Momonga likens to an item drop such as a data crystal from Yggdrasil.
