A farmer's son gifted with extraordinary talent, he cuts his way to the final undefeated, and there meets Gazef Stronoff in a close, celebrated bout that hands Brain his first loss.
The defeat reshapes his life. Declining offers from nobles, he leaves on a journey to sharpen his sword, crossing paths with figures like Rigrit Bers Caurau and paying his way as a mercenary of the Death Spreading Brigade. As introduced, he is lean and wild-looking, blue-haired, clad in chainmail with enchanted trinkets, and utterly convinced that his obsessive training has made him a man who cannot lose to anyone, with Gazef's defeat the goal that organizes his whole existence.
