Metro-General Hospital is short of beds, short of nurses, and short of patience with parents who will not vaccinate their children against measles. Shirley Benson is the administrator holding all of it together. She is the one who decides who gets a private room and who does not, and she hears about it either way. Tell her an insurer is about to cut a patient off and she will tell you she cannot sign every appeal she is handed and still run a hospital. Then, if the case is standing in front of her, she will find five more days. A bag of cheese blintz from her favorite place does not hurt, and she will say so.
