Born and raised in Baltimore, Sebastian Derik served S.H.I.E.L.D. for years as an assassin, until he learned he was dying. He became one of six terminal agents selected for Project T.A.H.I.T.I., an experimental program that treated its subjects with a mysterious compound. The treatment saved his life and broke his mind: like the other patients, Derik developed a compulsion to carve an unearthly pattern of symbols, and when the program's overseers responded by erasing his memory and issuing him a new identity, the compulsion survived the wipe. He carved the Words into walls, then had them tattooed across his own body, and the pain did what nothing else could, bringing his true past flooding back.
