Schutzstaffel
The Nazi Party's paramilitary order, grown from Hitler's guard into the Reich's most feared institution, and the parent organization under which Johann Schmidt founded the Hydra science division.
The Schutzstaffel, or SS, was a major paramilitary organization of Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler. Founded as a small personal guard drawn from the most loyal members of the earlier SA, it grew under Heinrich Himmler into the Third Reich's most feared institution, with its hand in policing, repression, and its own military formations, its black uniforms marked by the double-Sig runes and the death's head. Within its structure Himmler also sponsored stranger projects: after meeting the physicist Johann Schmidt in Berlin in 1934, he backed Schmidt in founding Hydra, an SS science division chartered to develop advanced weapons for the Reich. After the war, the SS was declared a criminal organization at the Nuremberg Trials.
