The Orb is a sealed sphere of worked metal, and its job is containment: whatever sits inside it is too destructive to be carried any other way. It spent millennia in a temple vault on Morag, a world whose tides fall back off the ruins only once in three hundred years, which is the only window anybody gets to walk in and take it. Thanos wants it, and Ronan the Accuser has been sent to bring it in.
