Jerome Zandow is a sideshow performer at Coney Island who built a modest name on his physical strength, and hires himself out as muscle and as a bouncer between shows. He fights with brute force rather than knives or guns, and is strong enough to overpower trained fighters. In 1946 he is hired by Leet Brannis to guard a tugboat, The Heartbreak.
