Jasper Evans

Jasper Evans is an inmate of Rikers Island, most of a lifetime deep into his sentence. He was a janitor once, then an addict, with a string of possession charges to show for it, and in 1991 the addiction took everything else: he walked into a convenience store with a gun, and by the time he walked out a cashier and an elderly bystander were dead. Two murder convictions put him behind bars for good. What Evans has left is a mother who outlived his conviction and a son, Elton, who grew up without him, and Evans' one persistent fear is that the boy will follow the path his father took.
