Jake Nelson is a United States Army veteran, discharged and deposited back into a New York City that has no obvious use for him. Civilian life does not fit: he describes the trouble as a monster inside him, killing him from the inside, and he medicates it with drugs and with beer at McFeeney's, the one place he says he is still welcome. He attends the veteran support group Curtis Hoyle runs at St. John's church, where he is the prickly one, the man who bristles at a civilian sitting in on the circle and then, hearing her out, apologizes like he means it.
