Isodyne Energy is a development laboratory of the 1940s, dedicated to fuel initiatives and run by the ambitious Calvin Chadwick. The company joined the nuclear arms race during the Second World War and never managed a working bomb, but the research it piled up along the way kept it funded, valuable and quietly entangled in confidential government contracts. Isodyne's hiring policy is its own kind of calculation: it recruits brilliant scientists other companies turn away, people shut out elsewhere because of their race or their sex, on the theory that talent with nowhere else to go stays loyal.
