Hasan

Hasan farms roses in British-occupied India, in a village where he argues that his neighbors should set their faiths aside and stand together against the British rather than against each other. He says it out loud and often, in speeches at gatherings that British soldiers keep breaking up. He lives in a small house his father built, ringed by flower fields, and he walks with a bad leg. Finding a young woman asleep among his roses one afternoon, he offers her shelter, is turned down, and feeds her anyway when she appears at his door that night. Her name is Aisha. They marry, and their daughter Sana is born into several happy years.
