Franklin Hall is a Canadian scientist celebrated for his theoretical work on Gravitonium, a vanishingly rare element with the power to warp gravity itself, whose existence most of his peers doubted until he predicted it. At the University of Cambridge he studied alongside Ian Quinn, the two young men bonding over the conviction that information should be free, though Hall saw danger where Quinn saw profit. Hall went on to work with S.H.I.E.L.D. as a chemical kinetics instructor, teaching cadets who included Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons, and the agency came to regard the soft-spoken professor as an asset worth protecting. While being transported under S.H.I.E.L.D. escort, Hall is kidnapped when armed men ambush his convoy.
