Ellen Brandt is a United States Army veteran who lost her lower left arm in service. Discharged and living with the amputation, she was approached by the scientist and entrepreneur Aldrich Killian with an offer to join the trials of Extremis, an experimental treatment developed under his think tank, Advanced Idea Mechanics, which promised that the body could be persuaded to repair itself. Brandt endured the infusion, and the treatment did what conventional medicine never could: it regrew her missing arm. The procedure left her changed in other ways as well, with unnatural strength and a body that can run hot enough to scorch whatever she touches, and it bound her future to Killian's program.
