Thor opens with that duty in action: in the year 965, when the Frost Giants of Jotunheim invade Norway seeking to plunge Earth into a new ice age, Odin leads his armies against them and drives them back to their frozen world. Armored in gold and bearing sword and spear, the Einherjar stand guard in Asgard's halls, at the Bifrost, and wherever the throne requires, the visible strength behind the realm's long peace.
