Duat

The Duat is the underworld of Egyptian belief, a realm of the dead lying parallel to the world of the living. It takes the form of a boundless desert under violet skies, an ocean of sand that a vessel can sail exactly as if it were water, and its true nature is said to be more than a human mind can hold, so the realm shows each arriving soul a shape it can understand. Egyptian tradition gives the Duat its arithmetic: a heart is weighed on the Scales of Justice against the Feather of Truth, and a balanced soul passes on to the peace of Aaru, the Field of Reeds, while an unbalanced one belongs to the sand.
