Donny Chavez grew up wanting to be like his father, a Marine who served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and lost both parents in a car accident when he was twelve. His grandmother raised him, and now that her medications cost more than her savings, Chavez pays for them: born in 1995, barely out of boyhood, he takes a construction job in New York City and walks onto a site run by men who do not shake his hand. He wants badly to be accepted, stays quiet when the crew's cruelty makes him uncomfortable, offers to buy the first round at Murphy's, and finds the one person on the site who interests him more than the crew does: the silent laborer with the scars, who tells him kindly enough that he is not looking for a friend.
