Destiny Gonzalez was raised in foster care and lived at the Helping Hand Youth Hostel, where she also worked the desk and waited tables. She had a daughter at fourteen, and the depression that followed took her schooling no further than a GED. She left the hostel eventually and went to Los Angeles looking for somewhere to start over. Two members of the Church of Gibborim, Aura and Frances, got her away from two men who meant her harm and offered her help. Her first thought was that she had walked into a cult. She took the help anyway, and she credits the church with turning her life around.
