Chula Battiest
In the Disney+ series Echo, Chula Battiest raises her family in Tamaha, Oklahoma, guided by visions of her Choctaw ancestors and by teachings she still studies and passes down to her granddaughters.
Chula Battiest is a Choctaw woman living in Tamaha, Oklahoma, and the grandmother of Maya Lopez, appearing in the Disney+ series Echo. Her pregnancy went badly enough that doctors warned her both she and the baby were in danger, so she left the hospital against their orders and went out into the woods with her friends and a midwife. There, in the middle of labor, she saw a vision of the Nanih Waiya and of her ancestors Tuklo and Chafa, whose presence steadied her and carried her through the birth of her daughter Taloa. She raised Taloa in Choctaw culture and learned American Sign Language because her daughter was deaf, and she keeps close to the teachings of her ancestors, studying the story of Chafa, the first Choctaw to save her family. Chula shares an easy warmth with Skully, and her granddaughters are Maya and Bonnie.
