Agnes Kitsworth is an art collector living out her remaining time in Caldes de Montbui, a quiet spa town in Spain, where she spends her days sketching churches. Years earlier she was the great love of the scientist Holden Radcliffe, who shared his transhumanist dreams with her, and when she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor he threw everything he had at curing her. Every attempt failed, and Radcliffe left, a wound Agnes carries with more finality than bitterness. She has since walked away from her old life, settling where nobody knows her diagnosis, because she cannot stand to hear one more person say they are sorry. She also has no idea that Radcliffe went on to give her face to Aida, the lifelike android he built as an assistant.
