The Tiste Andii are a sorcerous, black-skinned people out of the Elder Age, whom Hairlock calls the first children of Mother Dark, wielders of the Elder magic Kurald Galain.
Half a dozen legions of them descend from Moon's Spawn on Genabackis and join Caladan Brood and the Crimson Guard against the Malazan armies. Their lord, Anomander Rake, is said to have seen a hundred thousand winters. High Mage Tayschrenn calls them not unpredictable but simply different, a people with no cause of their own who drift from one human quarrel into another.
How far into Malazan have you read?
