Tiles of the Holds
The Letherii forerunner of the Deck of Dragons, a set of tiles standing for the ancient Holds and read by casting rather than by dealing, with the Errant as their master.
An older kind of divination than the Deck of Dragons, the Tiles of the Holds stand for the Holds that once existed everywhere in the world, and reading them is called casting the tiles. They are used chiefly in the Letherii Empire. A member of a Hold need not be a person; it may be a place or a thing. Where a Deck reader draws cards, lays them out and interprets the pattern, a caster of tiles watches images of what the members of the Holds are doing. The Errant is Master of the Tiles, and holds the Cedance to be the foundation of his realm. The Cedance is both the dominant set of tiles and the chamber that houses them, a vast circular room far below the Old Palace behind a pair of copper-sheathed doors, where narrow steps climb to a chained walkway hanging knee-high above the floor and end at an observation disc at the centre, with the enormous, ever-shifting tiles laid out below in a spiral.
