The Thaumaturgs, also called Theurgists, are the order of mages who serve as both ruling class and bureaucracy of the Kingdom of the Thaumaturgs in north-western Jacuruku. Authority rests with the Circle of Nine, the preeminent mages of the nation, headed by a Prime Master. Their kingdom is far more developed than its neighbours, with complex machinery for work such as milling, though its lower class amounts to serfs. The order devotes its resources and its research to unravelling the mysteries of Ascendancy, and is known above all for experiment: Denul magic and alchemy turned upon the human body to shape it into tools fitted to particular tasks.
