Commander of the Ehrlitan Red Blades, tall and oiled-bearded and armoured to the throat, a two-tulwar fighter whose own officers privately rate his courage well below his posturing.
Commander of the Ehrlitan Red Blades and a native of Seven Cities, Tene Baralta has no love at all for High Fist Pormqual, the governor the Empire set over the subcontinent. He is tall and broad and dusk-skinned, his beard kept slick with oil, and he goes armoured in a scaled vest, chainmail skirt and camail, gauntlets with spurred links, and greaves and vambraces of beaten bronze rimmed with iron. He fights with two tulwars. His subordinate Lostara Yil takes a colder view of him than his bearing invites, judging him something of a coward behind all the belligerence and posturing, a man eager to claim every success while stepping neatly out of the path of disaster, and possessed of a sadistic streak besides; Faradan Sort simply thinks him vain. It is Baralta who works out how to find Sha'ik, passing a stolen copy of the Book of Dryjhna to the spy Mebra as bait.
