Taxilian
A Taxila architect taken prisoner by the Third Edur Imperial Fleet and kept on as its interpreter, who withholds his true name for fear of what the Edur could do with it.
The man called Taxilian will not give out his own name. Names have power, and he is certain the Tiste Edur who hold him would use his to compel him, so Samar Dev names him instead for the tattoos on his forearms, which mark him as a man of Taxila. He was a struggling architect there before the Bluetongue Plague drove him to take ship, and the Edur fleet closed on his Tanno pilgrim vessel two days short of Rutu Jelba. Their mages killed the ship's Tanno Spiritwalker and kept him alive as a native translator. Samar Dev and Karsa Orlong first meet him among an Edur raiding party on the Olphara Peninsula, dragged out to interpret at a parley with his face swollen and bruised from constant beatings and his body filthy.
