Stratem is a vast, thinly settled southern continent of the Malazan world, the adopted homeland of the Crimson Guard mercenary company after they quit Quon Tali.
Stratem is a continent of the Malazan world, and shown at length in Ian C. Esslemont's Return of the Crimson Guard. It is a vast, thinly peopled land, wilderness on a continental scale, with few settlements of note and long coasts known mostly to traders and fisherfolk. Its place comes through the Crimson Guard: the mercenary company sworn against the Malazan Empire made Stratem its homeland after quitting the continent of Quon Tali, and holdings such as Fortress Haven on its shores belong to the Guard's story. To the empire itself Stratem is marginal, a far southern landmass beyond the usual reach of imperial ambition.
