Sepik is an island, and odd stories tell of two distinct populations there, one of them subject to the other.
Reading a mapmaker's notes, Samar Dev tells Karsa Orlong that its king had the wit to send envoys offering terms of surrender, which the Emperor simply accepted, and she doubts the Malazans have ever gone there. Her talk of it stirs something in Karsa, who presses her for more and resolves to go. Elsewhere Icarium and Taralack Veed make for the wild coast that faces the island, Icarium sensing that something waits for him there.
