Second Maiden Fort is a Letherii penal fortress on an island just south of the Reach peninsula, named in Midnight Tides. Its garrison numbers six hundred indicted soldiers, people serving sentences rather than commissions, and the population has held long enough to run across generations.
High cliffs ring the island apart from the entrance to its walled harbour. The fortress carries massive fortifications and towers with clear lines of sight and fire arcs facing both land and sea, every available space crowded with ballistae, mangonels and scorpions. Smaller forts cling to rock pile islands inside the harbour, hung with signal flags and backed by ten man pursuit galleys. Its port town runs to winding cobbled streets and sagging slate roofs.
