Second Maiden Fort is a heavily fortified island near the Reach, its towers mounted with huge ballistae, mangonels and scorpions that face both the sea and the land.
Setting out the frontier garrisons, the Letherii Preda describes its convict garrison as being retrained for battle, though she doubts how willing the prisoners are to fight. Rumour places among them a sorcerer said to have rivalled the Ceda himself. Small forts stand on heaps of rock inside the walled harbour, hung with signal flags, with swift pursuit galleys moored beside them, and harbour officials come out by scow to collect anchoring fees.
