A captain of the Malazan 14th Army out of Strike Island, spare with words and evasive about his past, who knows more of drowned coastlines and old maps than a soldier has cause to.
Ruthan Gudd is a captain of the Malazan 14th Army and was among the first officers listed to it; his lieutenant is a Napan woman named Raband. He gives Strike Island as his birthplace and very little else. Questions about his past he turns aside, saying he prefers to keep his head down and observing, dryly, that it is not working. Standing on the shore of the Kokakal Sea among the Adjunct's officers, he tells Madan'Tul Rada, Gall and Imrahl that a citadel once stood on an island out in that bay, thousands of years ago, and that when the T'lan Imass shattered a Jaghut enclave far to the north the ice went and the seas rose, and the water ate the island away to nothing but the ruined pillars of its causeway. Gall asks whether he is a historian as well as a soldier. Old maps, Gudd says. Captain Kindly, listening, remarks that he does not look Falari.
