Quaint

A high walled city-state on the shore of a peninsula, far from any neighbour, Quaint is ruled by King Macrotus the Overwhelmingly Considerate, who succeeded his vicious and corrupt brother Necrotus the Nihile. Macrotus is consumed by health and purity. He has made worship of the Lady of Beneficence the only legal religion, banished the court's mages, and raised an army of Well Knights to enforce volumes of new prohibitions covering every part of daily life. Vice is outlawed, diets are vegetarian, exercise is compulsory, public displays of emotion are forbidden, and infants may not disturb the peace with their crying. Every citizen's duty is to die healthy, and those who fail hang upside-down from the city walls. A colonnade in the royal palace displays the Healthy Dead upright in glass-lidded coffins. The Lady herself is said to dwell in a pit at the centre of her Grand Temple, where her voice is heard now and then above the altar.
